Ivan is a Criminal Defence Lawyer at Bloem Law, having joined the firm in late 2023.
Before entering legal practice, Ivan served for many years as a sworn member of New Zealand Police, where he held roles as both a qualified Detective and Police Prosecutor. He was deployed by United Nations to East Timor spending six months in charge of International Police in a district, which resulted in a written commendation. On his return, Ivan was engaged to work full-time on the implementation of the Criminal Procedure Act, leading detailed policy analysis and review, for which he received another formal commendation. This breadth of experience has given him a comprehensive understanding of criminal investigations, prosecution decision-making, and the practical operation of New Zealand’s criminal justice system.
Following his policing career, Ivan undertook a year-long full-time immersion programme in Te Reo Māori, deepening his connection to his whakapapa and strengthening his understanding of Te Ao Māori. That experience continues to shape his approach to clients, recognising the importance of culture, identity, and meaningful engagement in the justice process.
Ivan was drawn to criminal defence to advocate for individuals navigating some of the most challenging periods of their lives. He combines his investigative and prosecutorial insight with a client-centred approach founded on integrity, respect, and careful preparation. Now admitted as a lawyer, Ivan is committed to Bloem Law’s purpose of delivering transformational outcomes for every client. He approaches each case with professionalism, empathy, and determination, striving to achieve the best possible result while ensuring every client feels heard, supported, and effectively represented.
